AZ-800 and AZ-801: The Windows Server Hybrid Admin Path
Where AZ-800 sits, and what it asks of you
If you administer Windows Server and you are moving workloads between the data centre and Azure, AZ-800 is the exam that certifies you can do it. It is the first of two exams in the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate path; AZ-801 is the second, and you need both to earn the certification. AZ-800 covers the core infrastructure: identity, servers, virtual machines, networking, and storage. AZ-801 goes deeper into securing, migrating, monitoring, and recovering those workloads. This post is about the first exam, but keep the pairing in mind, because the two share a mindset and studying them back to back saves you re-learning the hybrid context twice.
The honest question most people arrive with is: how do I pass AZ-800 without wasting weeks on material the exam barely touches? The answer starts with knowing where the marks are.
The domains and how they are weighted
Microsoft publishes the functional groups and their weightings on the official study guide. Active Directory Domain Services dominates, so that is where the bulk of your study time belongs. The rest is split evenly across VMs and containers, networking, and storage, with hybrid server management the lightest slice. A third of the exam is AD DS. That means Azure AD Connect, sites and replication, domain controllers in Azure, Group Policy, and Flexible Single Master Operation roles are not optional revision. If you are strong on-premises but new to the hybrid identity story, spend your first week there.
Format, timing, and the pass mark
Microsoft scores AZ-800 on a scale of 0 to 1000, and you need 700 to pass. The score is scaled, not a simple percentage, so do not assume 70% of questions correct maps cleanly to a pass. Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count, so treat any number you see as an estimate. Be clear on this before you rely on any practise exam for Windows Server hybrid.
