CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006): What You Need to Know

Networking certifications·4 min read·PractiseExam

What is the CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006) exam, really?

If you are asking "How do I pass Linux+ without wasting three months on the wrong material?", start with the shape of the exam. CompTIA Linux+ is a single, vendor-neutral certification that validates hands-on Linux administration for systems, cloud, and DevOps roles. The XK0-006 version is 90 questions in 90 minutes - roughly one minute per question, delivered linearly (you move forward through the paper rather than jumping around freely). It is scored on a 100 to 900 scale with a passing score of 720.

Those constraints matter more than they sound. A one-minute-per-question pace means you cannot afford to read a scenario twice. The linear delivery means flagging and returning is not a strategy - you commit and move on. Building that rhythm before exam day is the single highest-leverage thing a good mock test pack gives you.

Domain weights: where the marks actually live

CompTIA publishes the exam objectives with explicit weightings, and XK0-006 spreads its 90 questions across five domains. Two domains - System Management and Troubleshooting - together account for nearly half the paper, so they deserve the largest share of your study calendar.

CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006) domain weights
DomainWeight
System Management23%
Services and User Management20%
Security18%
Automation, Orchestration, and Scripting17%
Troubleshooting22%

Weights are drawn from the official CompTIA Linux+ page. If a topic looks unfamiliar - say, container orchestration commands under Automation, or SELinux and AppArmor under Security - flag it early. On a 90-question paper, an 18% domain represents roughly 16 marks; ignoring one topic can quietly cost you the exam.

When you flag a topic as unfamiliar, a free CompTIA Linux+ study plan can fit it into a schedule that respects your available preparation time.

How to read the weights

Do not confuse "weight" with "difficulty". Troubleshooting is 22% of the paper, but the questions read as scenarios that stitch together the other four domains: a failing service, a full filesystem, a broken sudoers file. If your System Management, Services, and Security foundations are shaky, Troubleshooting collapses too. Study the four building-block domains first, then use practice sets to stress-test them under Troubleshooting scenarios.

Fidelity note: what this practise exam for Linux does and does not cover

Honesty first. The real CompTIA Linux+ exam includes performance-based questions - interactive tasks rather than multiple choice. Our mock is multiple-choice and multiple-response only. It covers every domain at its official weighting and matches the 90-question / 90-minute format, but you will not practise the interactive interface here.

The practical implication: pair the Linux+ mock test with actual terminal time. Spin up a VM (or two - one systemd distro, one that leans on alternatives), and rehearse the tasks you keep getting wrong on the mock. The mock tells you which concepts are shaky; the terminal turns that knowledge into muscle memory.

After the mock flags a weak area, a free CompTIA Linux+ readiness check can show whether your terminal practice has closed that gap.

A study plan that respects the 90-minute clock

  1. Week 1-2: Baseline. Take one full-length timed mock cold. Do not study first. The score is meaningless; the domain breakdown is gold.
  2. Week 3-5: Fix the two weakest domains. For most learners, that is Automation/Scripting and Security. Read, then do - write the scripts, harden the box, break it, fix it.
  3. Week 6: Full-paper rehearsals. At least three timed 90-question sets, back-to-back with your CLI lab. Track your per-question time, not just the score.
  4. Final week: Taper. Short focused reviews on your two weakest domains. Sleep. No new material.

A structured question bank is what makes step 1 and step 3 possible without burning out. Our CompTIA Linux+ mock test is built to the XK0-006 blueprint - same 90/90 timing, same domain mix - so your practice score becomes a genuine predictor rather than a vague hope.
