CompTIA Project+: The Best Entry-Level PM Certification?

Project & service management·4 min read·PractiseExam

Is CompTIA Project+ actually a good first PM certification?

If you manage small projects, coordinate cross-functional work, or want a credential before committing to PMP or PRINCE2, CompTIA Project+ is one of the few certifications built for that stage of a career. It is vendor-neutral, does not require years of documented project hours, and stays focused on the day-to-day mechanics of running projects rather than a specific methodology. That makes it useful for IT staff moving into coordination roles, business analysts picking up delivery work, and career changers who need a credible line on a CV without a multi-month study plan.

Before we get into content, here is what you are signing up for. The exam is 90 questions in 90 minutes - roughly a minute per question - delivered as a linear test. Scoring is on a 100 to 900 scale with a pass mark of 710. There is no adaptive scoring and no penalty for guessing, so pacing and coverage matter more than clever risk management. You can review the current objectives on the official CompTIA Project+ page. Our post on Is CompTIA Data+ the Best Entry-Level Data Certification? covers this further.

What the exam actually covers

The blueprint is split across four domains. The weights below are the official ones and drive how many questions you should expect from each area.

CompTIA Project+ domain weighting
DomainWeight
Project management concepts33%
Project life cycle phases30%
Tools and documentation19%
Basics of IT and governance18%

Two things stand out. First, more than 60% of the exam sits in concepts and life cycle phases, so if you can explain scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, resources, and communications at a working level - and walk through initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and closure without notes - you are already close to passing. Second, the tools and IT/governance domains reward familiarity, not depth. You need to recognise common artefacts (charters, RACI matrices, change logs, status reports) and understand governance concepts like SDLC awareness, data handling and vendor management, but you are not expected to configure anything. How do I pass Project+ without over-studying?

A realistic plan for someone with a year or two of project exposure looks like three to five weeks. Read the official objectives once, then work through a concise study guide mapped to those objectives. Do not read three books. After the first pass, switch to timed practice. Untimed reading gives you recognition; timed practice gives you recall under pressure, which is what the exam measures.

If you are not sure how to fit that into your schedule, a free CompTIA Project+ study plan turns your available hours into a week-by-week schedule built around the exam domains.

The single most effective habit is a weekly full-length CompTIA Project+ mock test at 90 minutes, sitting through the whole thing without pausing. Score it, then spend the next few days working only on the two weakest domains. Repeat. Two or three honest full-length attempts usually reveal whether you are ready. If you want a curated set of questions weighted to the real blueprint, our CompTIA Project+ mock test is built for exactly that loop. Looking for more detail? What this mock contains

The real CompTIA Project+ exam includes performance-based questions - interactive tasks rather than multiple choice. This mock is multiple-choice and multiple-response only. It covers every domain at its official weighting and matches the 90-question / 90-minute format, but you will not practise the interactive interface here. Plan to spend some time on CompTIA's own sample PBQs closer to your test date so the interface itself does not surprise you.
