What the Databricks Data Analyst Associate exam actually looks like

The Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate exam is a linear, multiple-choice form. You get 45 questions and 90 minutes, which works out to roughly two minutes per question. Section weights, straight from the official guide
The exam is heavily weighted toward hands-on SQL work in Databricks and the dashboarding surface built on top of it. Roughly a third of the paper is executing and analysing queries. Do not let the "AI Platform" and "AI/BI Genie" sections surprise you either - together they are almost a quarter of the exam. What the questions actually test
Expect scenario items rather than pure syntax quizzes. You will be asked which warehouse size fits a workload, why a query is slow, when to use a materialized view versus a streaming table, and how to share a dashboard or a Genie space with the right permissions. The Databricks SQL sections reward people who have actually written queries in the product; if your SQL is only from generic tutorials, the Warehouse and query-analysis items will feel awkward.
Dashboards and Genie together are 28 percent of the exam. That is a big block that many candidates under-prepare because it looks "soft". It is not - questions on filters, parameters, sharing, and Genie instructions are precise and easy to get wrong if you have never built one.
Where people lose marks
- Confusing Unity Catalog objects (catalog, schema, table, volume) and their grants.
- Guessing at warehouse sizing and auto-stop behaviour.
- Skimming the Genie section because it is new.
- Treating "Analyzing Queries" as trivia - it is 15 percent of the paper.
A study plan that matches the weights
- Spend the first block on Databricks SQL execution and query analysis - that is 35 percent of the exam in two adjacent sections.
- Then work through dashboards, visualisations, and Genie spaces together - another 28 percent.
- Close with the smaller sections: AI Platform, managing and importing data, modeling, and security.
- Take a full timed practise exam for data analytics workflows once you can explain, out loud, why each answer is correct.
