Microsoft DP-600: Implementing Analytics with Fabric

Data & AI·4 min read·PractiseExam

What DP-600 actually tests

If you are asking "How do I pass DP-600 without wasting weeks on the wrong material?", start with what the exam is really about. DP-600, formally Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, targets the analytics engineer who prepares data, builds semantic models, and keeps the whole solution healthy in production. It is not a Power BI report-authoring test, and it is not a pure data-engineering test either. It sits in the middle, and the questions punish candidates who prepared for only one side.

Before booking, read the objectives, work through hands-on labs in a Fabric workspace, and take at least one full-length Microsoft DP-600 mock test so you know how the timing feels under pressure.

Format, scoring, and time budget

Microsoft scores DP-600 on a 0 to 1000 scale, and 700 is the pass mark. Microsoft does not publish the exact number of items, and item counts vary between forms, so treat any specific number as an estimate. Our mock uses a 50-question, 100-minute layout, which gives you roughly two minutes per item. Real exam sittings are typically longer once interactive tasks are included, but the per-item rhythm is a fair rehearsal.

What this mock contains. The real DP-600 exam may include interactive components: tasks carried out against the product rather than answered as multiple choice. This mock is multiple-choice and multiple-response only. It covers every functional group at its published weighting, but you will not practise the interactive interface. Microsoft publishes no question count, so the 50-item length is ours; the 700/1000 pass standard is Microsoft's.

If the format still feels abstract, buy a mock test pack and run one timed attempt end to end. It is the fastest way to know whether you are ready or two weekends away.

Domain weights you must plan around

Microsoft groups the objectives into three functional areas. The weights below come straight from the official study guide and drive how you should split your revision hours.

A free DP-600 study plan can turn those weightings into a week-by-week schedule that fits the time you can give each week.

Prepare data (the biggest slice)

Nearly half of your score rides on data preparation, so this is where most candidates should spend most of their time. Expect questions on ingesting into a lakehouse and warehouse, using shortcuts, working with Dataflows Gen2, writing SQL and Spark transformations, handling incremental loads, and choosing the right storage pattern for a scenario. Read every option carefully: several answers will be technically valid, and the correct one is the one that best fits the stated constraint on cost, latency, or governance.

Implement and manage semantic models

This section covers designing star schemas, writing DAX for calculations and calculation groups, configuring row-level security, choosing storage modes, and optimising performance. If you have a Power BI background, this is your comfort zone, but do not skim it. Fabric adds Direct Lake mode and Copilot-assisted authoring, and both appear in questions.

Maintain a data analytics solution

The smallest slice covers workspace governance, deployment pipelines, source control with Git integration, monitoring, and endorsement. It is easy to underprepare here because it feels administrative, but a few well-targeted hours can lift your score meaningfully.

A four-week study plan

  1. Week 1. Provision a Fabric trial, walk through Microsoft Learn's DP-600 path, and take a diagnostic practise exam for analytics to see where you stand.
  2. Week 2. Deep dive on data preparation. Build a lakehouse, ingest with Dataflows Gen2, and write Spark and T-SQL transformations against the same dataset.
  3. Week 3. Model and secure. Build a star schema, add DAX measures and calculation groups, configure row-level security, and test in Direct Lake and Import.
  4. Week 4. Governance, deployment pipelines, and two full timed DP-600 mock test attempts. Review every wrong answer against the official docs.

When you are ready

Book only when your last full mock is comfortably above 700 and you have reviewed every miss. If you are close but not there, a fresh DP-600 mock test pack with unseen items is usually more useful than re-reading notes you already know.
