The Complete Network Engineer Certification Ladder (CompTIA to Cisco)

Career Ladder·4 min read·PractiseExam

Networking is one of the last disciplines where certifications have not been eroded by “we just use the cloud”. Employers still hire against a ladder here — Network+ opens the junior seat, CCNA opens the mid‑level seat, and CCNP variants open the senior specialisms. The path exists because the discipline still exists.

The seven‑exam ladder below is built the way network engineering careers are actually built: vendor‑neutral vocabulary first, then Cisco‑specific depth, then the specialism (routing, SD‑WAN, cloud networking) that matches your day job.

The whole ladder costs $101.93 in pack pricing today across the 7 sittable exams — entry pack per exam, bought as you reach each rung, no subscription.

Start here: Network+ before CCNA, always

CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) teaches the vendor‑neutral vocabulary that CCNA assumes you already have. Candidates who skip it and go straight to CCNA report spending their revision time learning the material Network+ would have taught them, at four times the cost. 90 questions in 90 minutes, one minute each — and PBQ simulations that eat time.

Core: CCNA is the hiring keyword

CCNA (200-301) is the exam most network job adverts filter on. 120 minutes for around 100 questions, scored on scale, and famously deep on subnetting and IP routing. This is the single most important paper on the network engineer path, and the one worth over‑preparing for.

Go deeper: CCNP is a family, not an exam

ENCOR (350-401) is the CCNP core paper. ENARSI (300-410) is the advanced routing concentration, ENSDWI (300-415) is SD‑WAN, and AWS Advanced Networking (ANS-C01) certifies the modern reality that most network estates now include cloud transit. Pick against the specialism your role rewards.

Practise against the paper you are booked for. A full-length CISCO CCNA 200 301 mock test reproduces the published question count and time limit exactly. Buy a mock test pack and find out where your preparation actually stands.

How do I pass Cisco Certified Network Associate? The specifics

The flagship paper on this ladder is Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). 100 questions in 120 minutes (72s per question). Reported as domain bands rather than a single score, so aim for “Target” or above on every domain. The single most useful thing to know before you sit it is the domain breakdown, because studying in proportion to the published weights is the highest‑return decision you can make.

Domain weightings, from the published outline
DomainWeight
IP Connectivity████████ 25%
Network Fundamentals███████ 20%
Network Access███████ 20%
Security Fundamentals█████ 15%
IP Services███ 10%

If you are searching for a “Cisco Certified Network Associate question dump” or a shortcut, understand what that trades off: dumps are frequently stale, are often against a retired exam version, and breach the candidate agreement you sign at the start of the paper. A full-length practise exam for Cisco Certified Network Associate written to the current published outline is the legitimate version of what a dump promises, and unlike the dump it teaches you the material you paid to learn.

How to use this ladder

Sit each rung in order. The exams higher up assume the instincts the exams below teach, and skipping a rung is visible in the resulting score. If you are wondering how do I pass the paper you are booked for, the single most useful step is to sit a full-length practise exam for that exact code end to end — every exam page on this site publishes the code, the question count, the time limit and the domain weightings from the awarding body's own outline.
