PRINCE2 7 Foundation vs PMP: Global Certification Differences

Project & service management·4 min read·PractiseExam

Which project management certification should you actually take?

If you are weighing PRINCE2 7 Foundation against the PMP, you are really choosing between two different philosophies of project work. PRINCE2, published by PeopleCert, is a defined method — a set of principles, practices, and processes you follow. The PMP, awarded by PMI, is a broader competency exam that tests judgement across predictive, agile, and hybrid delivery. Both are respected globally, but they are not interchangeable, and the right pick depends on your region, your experience, and the kind of projects you run.

Scope and philosophy

PRINCE2 7 Foundation confirms that you understand the method well enough to work inside a PRINCE2-governed project. It is prescriptive: there are named roles, management products, and stage boundaries, and the exam checks that you can recognise and apply them. PMP is broader and more situational. It expects a few years of leading projects and tests how you would behave — how you handle a stakeholder conflict, choose a life cycle, or protect a schedule — rather than whether you can name a document.

That difference shapes who each exam suits. If you are early-career, or joining an organisation that already runs PRINCE2 (common across UK government, much of Europe, Australia, and parts of the Middle East and Africa), PRINCE2 7 Foundation is the faster, cheaper entry point. If you already lead projects and want a credential recognised almost everywhere in North America, the PMP carries more weight.

Exam format at a glance

PRINCE2 7 Foundation is a linear, closed-book paper of 60 questions in 60 minutes. You need 36 correct to pass — a 60% bar — and every question counts equally. There are no prerequisites; anyone can sit it. The PMP, by contrast, is a longer exam (around 180 questions over roughly four hours) with formal eligibility requirements covering education and documented project leadership experience, and PMI requires 35 hours of project management training before you apply.

PRINCE2 7 Foundation syllabus weighting

The five syllabus areas below are drawn from the current PeopleCert exam specification. Practices carry the largest share, so structure your study around them first.

Before you structure that study, a free PRINCE2 7 Foundation readiness check gives you a quick look at the syllabus area needing the most work.

PRINCE2 7 Foundation domain weighting (PeopleCert)
DomainQuestionsApprox. weight
PRINCE2 Practices3355%
PRINCE2 Processes3050%
PRINCE2 Principles1525%
People1220%
Key Concepts and Tailoring1017%

Weightings are published by PeopleCert on the official PRINCE2 examination format page. Question counts across areas overlap because some questions map to more than one syllabus objective, which is why the percentages sum to more than 100.

Cost, time, and effort

PRINCE2 7 Foundation is the lighter commitment on every axis. Exam fees are lower, training is shorter (typically two to three days of guided study), and there are no experience prerequisites to satisfy before you book. The PMP is a larger investment of money and preparation time, and PMI requires you to earn PDUs to keep the credential active. PRINCE2 also has a renewal path through PeopleCert's membership, but the ongoing effort is lower.

A free PRINCE2 7 Foundation study plan gives you a week-by-week schedule that fits the time you can commit before the exam.

Which one gets you hired?

Look at the job ads in the country and sector you want to work in. In UK public sector, defence, and much of the Commonwealth, PRINCE2 is often listed explicitly. In US corporate environments, PMP is the default. In global consultancies and multinationals, either helps, and holding both is common at senior levels. If you are still early in your career, PRINCE2 7 Foundation is a low-risk way to prove you understand structured project delivery, and it stacks well with a later PMP.

How do I pass PRINCE2 7 Foundation?

The exam rewards recognition over recall, so drilling the vocabulary of principles, practices, and processes matters more than memorising templates. Read the official manual once, then spend most of your time on scenario-style questions until you can answer them without hesitation. A structured mock test pack is the fastest way to build that reflex — use one full-length PRINCE2 7 Foundation mock test under real timing to find your weak areas, then target them with focused sets. A good practise exam for project management should mirror the 60-in-60 pace and mix all five syllabus areas.

Every domain on the exam blueprint gets covered in PRINCE2 7 Foundation exam simulations — no surprises.
