How do I actually set up for PenTest+?
If you have booked a seat for CompTIA PenTest+ and you are staring at the objectives wondering where to start, this guide gives you a working setup: a study order that mirrors the exam blueprint, a lab you can actually run on a laptop, timing habits that survive question 60, and a place for a CompTIA PenTest+ mock test in your week. The goal is not to cram trivia — it is to walk into the test centre with the same tools, muscle memory, and pacing you have been using for weeks.
Know the shape of the exam
PenTest+ PT0-003 is 90 questions in 165 minutes, delivered linearly, with a scaled pass mark of 750 on a 100–900 scale. That works out to roughly 110 seconds per question on average, but the real exam mixes multiple-choice items with performance-based questions (PBQs) that eat time. Plan to bank time on the shorter items so the interactive tasks do not squeeze you.
Weight your study by the blueprint
CompTIA publishes the domain weights, and they should drive how many evenings you spend on each area. Attacks and exploits is by far the largest slice — if your lab time is not going there, your plan is wrong.

Confirm the numbers against the official CompTIA PenTest+ page before you print any study plan — weights do change between revisions. When you feel a domain is stable, prove it with a targeted practise exam pack filtered to that objective rather than another read-through of the same notes.
Build a lab you will actually use
The single biggest predictor of a comfortable exam day is having done the work with your hands. A minimum viable setup:
- A host with virtualisation — 16 GB RAM is comfortable, 8 GB works if you are disciplined about which VMs you run.
- A Kali or Parrot attacker VM, snapshotted clean so you can roll back after each engagement.
- Two or three deliberately vulnerable targets on an isolated host-only network — a Windows box, a Linux box, and something web-app focused.
- Nmap, Nessus or OpenVAS, Burp Suite Community, Metasploit, BloodHound, and a scripting environment you are fluent in (Python or PowerShell).
Run a real engagement loop end to end at least three times: scope, recon, enumerate, exploit, pivot, loot, report. Engagement management is only 13% of the exam, but writing an actual report teaches you the vocabulary the questions use — scope creep, rules of engagement, SLAs, retest clauses.
Train pacing, not just knowledge
Most people who fail PenTest+ do not run out of knowledge — they run out of clock. Build the pacing habit early:
- Do short 20-question sets under strict time — around 35 minutes — so you feel what "average pace" is in your body.
- Once a week, sit a full-length PENTEST-PT0-003 mock test in one sitting with no phone, no notes, no pausing.
- Review every question you got wrong and every question you got right but were unsure about. The second bucket is where your score really lives.
The last two weeks
In the final fortnight, stop reading new material. Do a full mock test pack under exam conditions, mark the domains where you drop below 75%, and spend the next day only in the lab on those. Repeat. On the day before the exam, do one short set to keep the reflexes warm, then rest.
What this mock contains
The real PenTest+ exam includes performance-based questions — interactive tasks rather than multiple choice. This mock is multiple-choice and multiple-response only. It covers every domain at its official weighting and matches the real question count and timing, but you will not practise the interactive interface here. Your scaled score is our estimate; CompTIA weights PBQs more heavily than multiple-choice and does not publish that weighting. Use the mock to prove your knowledge coverage and pacing, and use your lab to prove your hands.
