The Ultimate Guide to the AWS Machine Learning Specialty (MLS-C01)
How do I pass the AWS MLS-C01?
The honest answer: the MLS-C01 is less about memorising SageMaker APIs and more about making defensible machine learning decisions under AWS constraints. Most candidates who fail this exam know the theory but stumble when a question asks which algorithm, which instance type, which data pipeline, and which deployment pattern all belong in the same answer. If you want to pass, you need to practise reasoning through long AWS scenarios at exam pace, which is where a focused MLS-C01 mock test pack does most of the heavy lifting.
What the MLS-C01 actually tests
The AWS Certified Machine Learning - Specialty is a 65-question, 180-minute exam scored on a 100 to 1000 scale, with a passing score of 750. That gives you roughly 166 seconds per question, which sounds generous until you meet a scenario with a paragraph of context, five bullet points of constraints, and four plausible-looking answers. Questions are delivered linearly, so you can flag and revisit. Use that. On a first pass, answer the questions you are sure of, flag the rest, and come back with the time you saved.
Domain weighting
The exam is split across four domains. These weights come straight from the official AWS MLS-C01 exam guide.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Data Engineering | 20% |
| Exploratory Data Analysis | 24% |
| Modeling | 36% |
| Machine Learning Implementation and Operations | 20% |
Modeling is the largest single domain, but do not treat the other three as filler. Data Engineering and ML Implementation questions are where AWS tests whether you can actually build and run a system, and Exploratory Data Analysis is where careless candidates lose points on feature engineering and bias detection. For practical tips on this, see Databricks Machine Learning Associate vs Microsoft AI-102.
A four-week study plan that respects the weights
Week 1: Data Engineering
Get fluent with S3 storage classes, Kinesis Data Streams versus Firehose, Glue jobs and crawlers, and when a Data Lake beats a warehouse. Practise choosing between batch and streaming ingestion under cost and latency constraints. Expect at least one question where the "right" ML answer is really a data pipeline answer.
Week 2: Exploratory Data Analysis
Drill missing-value strategies, encoding categorical features, handling class imbalance, and detecting label leakage. Know which visualisations diagnose which problem, and know when a QuickSight dashboard is enough versus when you need a notebook. This domain is where a good practise exam for machine learning fundamentals pays off, because AWS reuses the same traps across many scenarios.
Week 3: Modeling
This is the heaviest domain, so give it the most hours. Cover the built-in SageMaker algorithms (XGBoost, Linear Learner, DeepAR, BlazingText, Object2Vec, Semantic Segmentation, Factorization Machines) and, crucially, when to pick each. Understand hyperparameter tuning, regularisation, evaluation metrics for classification versus regression versus ranking, and the trade-offs of transfer learning. Know exactly what precision, recall, F1, AUC, RMSE, and MAPE mean and when each is the correct optimisation target. Week 4: Implementation, Operations, and full-length practice
Cover SageMaker endpoints (real-time, serverless, asynchronous, batch transform), multi-model endpoints, A/B and shadow deployments, Model Monitor, and how IAM and VPC endpoints secure the pipeline. In this final week, sit at least two full 65-question timed papers. Do not review answers between questions. Score, then diagnose. If you want structured coverage across all four domains at real exam length, run through a full AWS Certified Machine Learning - Specialty mock test and treat every wrong answer as a study prompt, not a grade.
To make that full-length practice count, use the free study plans and readiness checks for a schedule that fits your time and a quick check of weak topics.
How to use mock tests without fooling yourself
A mock test is a diagnostic, not a rehearsal for memorisation. After each attempt, group your wrong answers by domain and by failure type: knowledge gap, misread question, ran out of time, or picked a working answer that was not the best answer. AWS loves that last category. Two or three "correct" options will solve the problem; only one meets every constraint on cost, latency, security, and operational overhead.
When you can consistently score above the 750 threshold on fresh papers with time to spare, you are ready. A focused MLS-C01 practise exam pack is the cheapest way to get there without burning a real exam voucher on a dry run.
