The Secret to Passing MS-900 Microsoft 365 Fundamentals

What passing MS-900 actually takes

If you are asking "How do I pass MS-900?", the honest answer is that this is a breadth exam, not a depth exam. Microsoft 365 Fundamentals (MS-900) asks you to recognise what each service does and where it fits, rather than to configure anything. You get 50 questions and 100 minutes, which works out to roughly 120 seconds per question. That is comfortable time, so the pressure is not the clock. The pressure is coverage: the questions range across the whole Microsoft 365 stack, and a thin spot in one area is enough to tip a borderline result.

The pass standard is 700 on a scale that runs from 0 to 1000. That number is Microsoft's, not a rounded-up guess. It does not translate cleanly to "70% of questions correct" because the exam is scaled, but it is a useful anchor: you need solid, consistent recognition across the board, not brilliance in one corner.

Where the marks sit

The single most useful thing you can do before you open a study guide is look at how the exam is weighted. Half of the entire exam is one functional group. Study in proportion to the table below and you will not waste hours on an 8% slice while the 50% slice stays shaky.

MS-900 domain weightings, as published by Microsoft (verified 24 August 2026)
Functional groupWeight
Describe cloud concepts8%
Describe Microsoft 365 apps and services50%
Describe security, compliance, privacy, and trust in Microsoft 36528%
Describe Microsoft 365 pricing, licensing, and support14%

You can confirm these on Microsoft's published MS-900 study guide. The apps and services group carries the exam, so that is where the bulk of your reading should go: what Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, and the collaboration tools each do, and how they differ. Security, compliance, privacy, and trust is the next-biggest at more than a quarter of the paper, so treat identity, Microsoft Purview concepts, and the trust and privacy story as core material, not an afterthought.

A study order that respects the weights

Start with apps and services, because it is both the largest group and the one that makes the rest easier to reason about. Once you can say clearly what each product is for, security and compliance stops feeling abstract, because you know what is being secured. Do pricing, licensing, and support next: it is only 14%, but it is high-yield revision because the facts are concrete and memorable. Leave cloud concepts for a short, focused session at the end. At 8% it is the smallest slice, and if you have worked in or around Microsoft 365 at all, much of it will already be familiar.

Where a mock test earns its place

Reading builds recognition; a mock test pack tells you whether that recognition survives exam-style phrasing. The value of a practise exam for Microsoft 365 is not the score, it is the review afterwards: every question you get wrong points at a specific gap, and because the exam is weighted, a wrong answer in the apps-and-services group matters more to your real result than one in cloud concepts. Sit a full MS-900 mock test under timed conditions, then read every explanation, right or wrong.

One thing to be straight about. What this mock contains: it covers every functional group at its published weighting, but the real MS-900 exam may include interactive components, tasks you carry out against the product rather than answer as multiple choice. This mock is multiple-choice and multiple-response only, so you will practise the knowledge but not the interactive interface. Microsoft publishes no official question count, so the 50-item length here is ours; the 700 out of 1000 pass standard is Microsoft's.

Used honestly, that is still a strong signal. If you can clear a full-length Microsoft 365 Fundamentals (MS-900) mock test comfortably, with your weak groups reviewed and closed, you are in good shape for the real thing. When you are ready to rehearse under time, get a mock test pack and treat each attempt as a diagnostic rather than a verdict. Study in proportion to the weights, review every miss, and MS-900 becomes a very passable exam.
