A 6-Month Intensive Study Plan for the German Kenntnisprüfung
Internal Medicine and Surgery Track for International Doctors
Published by PractiseExam.com | Updated June 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes
The Kenntnisprüfung (KP) is not an exam you can cram for. It covers the breadth of German clinical medicine, tests your clinical reasoning in a foreign language, and is assessed by panels of practising German physicians who know immediately when a candidate's knowledge has gaps.
What the KP does reward is systematic, sustained preparation. The doctors who pass on the first attempt — across internal medicine, surgery, and everything in between — are the ones who followed a structured 6-month plan, used the right German-language resources, and practised clinical reasoning out loud, in German, consistently.

The 6-Month Study Plan: Month-by-Month Breakdown
*The most important study habit: after every practice question you get wrong, do not just read the correct answer. Write a 3-sentence explanation in German of why the correct answer is right. This dual processing (clinical reasoning + German output) is exactly what the KP oral exam demands.*

The Oral KP Examination: What to Expect
The oral examination (muendliche Pruefung) is typically 30-60 minutes before a panel of 2-3 examiners. Most panels present 2-3 clinical cases and ask you to work through history, examination, differential diagnosis, investigations, and management — in German.
- Case presentation: Use the 7-step Patientenvorstellung structure (see DE9)
- Differential diagnosis: Always list at least 3 — 'Differenzialdiagnostisch kommen infrage: erstens... zweitens... drittens...'
