This SAA-C03 study plan allocates time by AWS's published domain weights: Design Secure Architectures (30%), Design Resilient Architectures (26%), Design High-Performing Architectures (24%), and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures (20%). Pick a 4-, 8-, or 12-week track below, spend time on each domain roughly proportional to its weight, and finish with full-length timed mocks.
A study plan for SAA-C03 works best when it mirrors how AWS actually weights the exam, rather than splitting time evenly across four domains that are not equally important.
Time allocation by SAA-C03 domain weight
| Domain | Weight | Share of study time |
|---|---|---|
| Design Secure Architectures | 30% | Largest share |
| Design Resilient Architectures | 26% | Second-largest |
| Design High-Performing Architectures | 24% | Third, but widest in scope |
| Design Cost-Optimized Architectures | 20% | Smallest, but do not skip |
Design High-Performing Architectures has five separate objective statements even though its weight is third, so treat it as needing more calendar time than its percentage alone suggests, since you are covering more distinct sub-topics inside it.
4-week SAA-C03 study plan
Use this track only if you already meet the recommended hands-on background and mainly need to review and drill.
- Week 1: Design Secure Architectures — IAM, security groups, NACLs, encryption and key management, all three objective statements from the exam guide.
- Week 2: Design Resilient Architectures and half of Design High-Performing Architectures — decoupling patterns, Multi-AZ, Auto Scaling, plus storage and compute performance objectives.
- Week 3: Finish Design High-Performing Architectures (database, network, data ingestion) and all of Design Cost-Optimized Architectures.
- Week 4: Full review across all four domains, sample questions, and repeated full-length timed mocks.
8-week SAA-C03 study plan
- Weeks 1-2: Design Secure Architectures, in depth, covering all three objectives with hands-on practice, not just reading.
- Weeks 3-4: Design Resilient Architectures, covering both objectives with a focus on matching availability patterns to stated recovery requirements.
- Weeks 5-6: Design High-Performing Architectures, split across its five objectives (storage, compute, database, network, data ingestion) since it is the broadest domain.
- Week 7: Design Cost-Optimized Architectures, all four objectives, plus a first full-length timed mock to check pacing.
- Week 8: Targeted review of your weakest domain from that mock, plus sample questions and a second timed mock before booking.
12-week SAA-C03 study plan
- Weeks 1-3: Design Secure Architectures, building hands-on practice alongside the objective statements if this is a newer area for you.
- Weeks 4-6: Design Resilient Architectures, with lab time on decoupling and multi-AZ or multi-Region patterns.
- Weeks 7-9: Design High-Performing Architectures, spending roughly a week on each pair of its five objectives.
- Week 10: Design Cost-Optimized Architectures, all four objectives.
- Week 11: First full-length timed mock, then a full review pass across whichever domains scored weakest.
- Week 12: Sample questions, a second timed mock, and final review before booking through cost and booking.
Adjusting the plan to your background
If you already work daily with AWS security and IAM, compress the Secure Architectures block and give that time to whichever domain is least familiar instead; the weights above are AWS's guide to exam content, not a mandate to spend equal calendar time regardless of your starting point. Re-check the exam objectives page at the start of your plan and again halfway through, so your remaining weeks target objectives you have not actually practiced rather than ones you already feel confident about.
However you divide the weeks, finish every track the same way: full-length timed mocks under the same 130-minute limit as the real exam, reviewed against the domain breakdown so your last study days go to the domain that needs it most.
