The pl 300 exam pattern gives candidates 100 minutes to complete the assessment, with a passing score of 700 required. Microsoft does not publish an official question count or a breakdown of question types for this exam. Scoring is weighted across three domains: Prepare the data, Visualize and analyze the data, and Manage and secure Power BI.
Understanding the pl 300 exam pattern before you book helps you plan your time in the room, not just your study hours. Here is everything Microsoft publishes about format and scoring for Exam PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst, current as of the skills-measured version dated April 20, 2026.
PL-300 exam duration
Microsoft allots 100 minutes for the exam. That window covers reading, answering, and reviewing every item, so pacing matters more on this exam than on ones with a longer clock.
PL-300 passing score
The official study guide states that a score of 700 or greater is required to pass. Microsoft does not publish the scale that score sits on, so treat 700 as the number to hit rather than trying to infer a percentage from it.
PL-300 number of questions
Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count for PL-300, and it does not publish a breakdown of question types either. Some Microsoft exams mix single-answer, multiple-response, drag-and-drop, and case-study items; PL-300's own materials describe the exam only in terms of duration and passing score, not item count or type.
Interactive components: what the real exam may include
Microsoft's exam policy notes that PL-300 "may have interactive components," meaning tasks performed against a live or simulated Power BI environment rather than answered as multiple choice. This is the single biggest gap between any third-party mock, including ours, and the real exam.
What our mock reproduces
Our PL-300 practice test is multiple-choice and multiple-response only. It covers every domain from the syllabus at its published weighting: Prepare the data and Visualize and analyze the data each at 38%, and Manage and secure Power BI at 24%. The mock runs 50 questions across 100 minutes, matching the real exam's timing window.
What our mock does not reproduce
The mock does not include interactive, product-based tasks. If the real exam presents a live-environment component, our multiple-choice format cannot simulate the interface itself, only the underlying decision-making. Treat the mock as a way to check domain knowledge and question-reasoning speed, not as a rehearsal of the interactive interface.
Delivery format
PL-300 is delivered through Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or as an online proctored exam. Microsoft's policy states the exam will be proctored; beyond the Pearson VUE scheduling link, no separate online-proctoring vendor is named. For step-by-step check-in guidance, see our PL-300 online exam page.
Language availability
Microsoft offers PL-300 in English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese (Traditional), and Italian. If you are testing outside an English-speaking market, confirm your preferred language is available for your scheduled slot when you book.
Why the published pattern matters more than it looks
Because Microsoft withholds the question count and question-type breakdown, candidates sometimes assume the exam is a mystery to prepare for. It is not: the domains, their weighting, the duration, and the passing score are all published, and those four facts are enough to build a serious study and practice routine around. What stays unknown is only the exact number and shape of the items you will see, not what those items will be about. Pacing yourself against the 100-minute window during practice is the closest substitute for knowing an exact count, since it forces you to develop a feel for how much time a typical scenario question actually takes.
How format connects to the rest of your prep
Once you understand the pattern, the next steps are sequencing your study and checking your recall. Our PL-300 syllabus lists every objective by domain, our PL-300 study plan turns that syllabus into a week-by-week plan, and our PL-300 sample questions let you try items written to this exact format before you commit to a full timed run. For what happens after you pass, see PL-300 renewal.
