Quick answer

This pl 300 study plan offers three lengths: a compact plan, a standard plan, and an extended plan, all weighted the same way Microsoft weights the exam itself. Prepare the data and Visualize and analyze the data each get the largest share of study time, since Microsoft weights them equally at 38%, while Manage and secure Power BI, weighted 24%, gets a smaller but still deliberate block.

A pl-300 study plan only works if it mirrors how the exam is actually scored. Microsoft weights Prepare the data and Visualize and analyze the data equally at 38% each, and Manage and secure Power BI at 24%. Every plan below keeps that same ratio, just compressed or stretched across a different number of weeks.

How to choose a plan length

Pick the plan based on how much hands-on Power BI experience you already have, not on an arbitrary deadline. If you already meet the recommended prerequisites, a shorter plan focused on gaps is realistic. If several domains feel unfamiliar rather than just rusty, choose a longer plan and do not compress it just to hit a target date.

4-week plan (compact)

This plan assumes you are already comfortable in Power BI and are using the weeks mainly to close specific gaps and rehearse timing.

  • Week 1: Prepare the data. Work through every objective under this domain: connecting to sources, choosing between DirectLake, DirectQuery, and Import, cleaning and resolving data quality issues, and shaping columns, fact tables, and dimension tables.
  • Week 2: Visualize and analyze the data, part one. Focus on visual selection, formatting, conditional formatting, slicing and filtering, and Copilot-assisted report creation.
  • Week 3: Visualize and analyze the data, part two, plus Manage and secure Power BI. Cover DAX visual calculations, bookmarks, custom tooltips, and visual interactions, then move into workspace creation, apps, dashboards, and distribution.
  • Week 4: Manage and secure Power BI continued, then full review. Finish row-level security roles and group membership, item-level and semantic model access, then run timed practice covering all three domains together.

8-week plan (standard)

This plan gives each domain a dedicated build week and a dedicated review week, which suits candidates who know Power BI but have not worked across all three domains equally.

  • Weeks 1 and 2: Prepare the data. Spend the first week on connecting to data, storage mode choices, and profiling and cleaning; spend the second week on transforming, loading, and building fact and dimension tables, with practice items after each sub-topic.
  • Weeks 3 and 4: Visualize and analyze the data. Spend the first week on visual selection, formatting, themes, and conditional formatting; spend the second on Copilot-assisted report creation, DAX visual calculations, bookmarks, tooltips, and visual interactions.
  • Weeks 5 and 6: Manage and secure Power BI. Spend the first week on workspaces, apps, publishing, dashboards, distribution, and scheduled refresh; spend the second on workspace roles, item-level access, semantic model access, and row-level security.
  • Weeks 7 and 8: Mixed review and timed practice. Revisit weak spots identified during earlier weeks, then run full-length timed mocks covering all three domains at their real weighting.

12-week plan (extended)

This plan suits candidates newer to one or more domains, or anyone studying part time around a full workload.

  • Weeks 1 to 4: Prepare the data. Take an extra week per sub-topic: connecting and parameters, profiling and cleaning, column typing and transformation, then aggregation, pivoting, semi-structured conversion, and fact and dimension table design.
  • Weeks 5 to 8: Visualize and analyze the data. Spread visual selection and formatting, Copilot report creation, paginated reports, DAX visual calculations, and usability features like bookmarks and tooltips across four separate weeks so each gets real practice time, not just a read-through.
  • Weeks 9 to 11: Manage and secure Power BI. Dedicate one week each to workspace and asset management, distribution and governance, and access control including row-level security, since this domain mixes administration and security concepts that are easy to conflate if rushed.
  • Week 12: Full review and timed practice. Run multiple timed mocks across the full syllabus, focusing extra time on whichever domain scored lowest in your first attempt.

Using sample questions alongside any plan

Whichever length you choose, check your recall against our PL-300 sample questions as you finish each domain, not only at the end. Each sample question is labeled by domain, so you can match it directly to the week you just completed. For the full list of what each domain covers, see the PL-300 syllabus, and for timing and scoring details, see PL-300 exam format and scoring.

Questions people ask

Which pl 300 study plan length should I pick?

Choose based on experience, not deadline. A compact plan suits candidates already comfortable across Power Query, DAX, and workspace administration; a longer plan suits anyone who finds one or more domains genuinely unfamiliar rather than just rusty.

How to prepare for pl 300 if I have limited time?

Follow the compact plan structure: cover every objective in Prepare the data and Visualize and analyze the data first, since they carry the largest combined weight, then finish with Manage and secure Power BI and a full timed review.

Does this pl-300 study plan match the real exam weighting?

Yes. Every plan length keeps Prepare the data and Visualize and analyze the data at the largest, equal share of study time and Manage and secure Power BI at a smaller share, matching Microsoft's own domain weighting for the exam.

Is there an official pl 300 course or training required?

Microsoft does not require a specific course as a prerequisite. This study plan is organized around the published syllabus and objective statements rather than any single training product.

When should I take a full timed practice test during my plan?

At the end of every plan length, and additionally at the midpoint of the standard or extended plans. Timed practice checks pacing and domain balance, which reading alone cannot verify.

What if I run out of time before finishing the plan?

Prioritize the domains weighted equally at the top, Prepare the data and Visualize and analyze the data, since they make up the larger combined share of the score, and treat Manage and secure Power BI as the section to finish last if time is short.
